Belonging Platform (Cultural Hub on Tigris River in Baghdad)

The Belonging Platform responds to the growing disconnection between Iraq’s youth and their cultural roots due to decades of conflict, migration, and globalization. As traditional values fade, there is a critical need to restore local identity and foster social unity. This project proposes a cultural complex on the Tigris River in Adhamiya, Baghdad, aiming to reconnect people with their heritage through inclusive, engaging spaces that reflect the soul of the city. The research phase explored the history of cultural centers in Baghdad and worldwide, identifying their evolving role in preserving identity and promoting community participation. Through analysis of global and local case studies, the project defined its components and concept—shaped by Baghdad’s historical urban fabric and cultural traditions. The design respect the surrounding, use of circular Baghdadi map, creating a pedestrian bridge that links surrounding neighborhoods to the complex, symbolizing connectivity and unity. Architectural elements such as courtyards, semi-basements, narrow alleys, and shanasheel were integrated to reflect traditional Baghdadi houses and atmosphere. The project includes a grand theater, open-air stage, Baghdadi library, wax and virtual museums, traditional cafés, a Maqam house, educational workshops, and a fashion runway. Cultural and environmental sustainability were central to the design approach, with emphasis on public accessibility, traditional materials, and community interaction. The platform serves as a dynamic cultural space for learning, expression, and dialogue—strengthening identity, supporting tourism, and engaging institutions. Ultimately, the Belonging Platform aims to be a symbol of cultural resilience and a model for identity-centered urban renewal in Iraq.
