Abstract
The “Ecological Resort in Mosul City” project responds to the urgent need for sustainable tourism in a post-conflict urban environment. Drawing upon Mosul’s rich historical and cultural identity, the resort aims to revitalize the city’s tourism sector while prioritizing environmental preservation. This graduation project was developed in two integrated academic phases. The first phase constitutes the theoretical thesis, which investigates the historical evolution of tourism and resort development, with a particular focus on the global transition toward eco-resorts as a sustainable response to environmental degradation and climate change. This phase includes analytical studies of international case studies, forming a foundational base of knowledge and design strategies applicable to Mosul’s unique context. Building upon the insights gained, the second phase involves the practical design of the eco resort, located on the banks of the Tigris River, directly facing the historic village of Al-Salamiyah . As part of the project’s holistic vision, a conceptual connection between the resort site and the village is proposed to enhance cultural continuity and spatial integration between the two riverbanks. The master plan is grounded in ecological design principles and draws inspiration from the fluid forms of riverboats and water vortices, ensuring visual and functional harmony with the surrounding natural environment. Sustainable strategies are integrated throughout, such as solar powered south-facing roofs, use of local stone, thick insulated walls, etc. Ultimately, this project aspires to offer a model for ecological and cultural tourism that supports environmental awareness, economic recovery, and long-term urban development in Mosul.
