Isolation and Characterization of Bacteria Associated with Urinary Tract Infection in Diabetics and Non-diabetics Women

Urine samples were collected from Dr Khalid general hospital and student’s accommodation in Koya city from November, 2017 to February, 2018. Med-stream urine samples were obtained from a total of 60 patients; the samples were collected in equal number from diabetic and non-diabetic women (1:1). Three different species of bacteria were diagnosed by conventional methods and antibiotic sensitively test were carried out by agar disc diffusion. Escherichia coli was isolated in 10/30 (33%) in diabetics versus 15/30 (50%) in non-diabetics. Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated in 6/30 (20%) in diabetics and 3/30 (10%) in non-diabetics. Enterococcus spp. were isolated in 4/30 (13%) in diabetics and 2/30 (7%) in non-diabetics. on one hand, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterococcus spp. in both groups showed resistance to ampicillin and norfloxacin. On the other hand, ciprofloxacin and chloramphenicol were the most effective antibiotic against all bacterial species in both groups. The aims of this study was to determine the differences in microbiological characteristic of urinary tract infection between diabetic and non-diabetic women and then investigate their antibiotic sensitivity.
