Abstract
This study explores the sustainability of rural housing in Iraq’s marshlands, renowned for their unique wetland
ecology and rich historical heritage. Adopting a multi-dimensional framework, the research focuses on social, economic, environmental, and cultural aspects to assess the viability of floating or semi-floating housing units constructed from locally available materials such as reeds and silt. Methodologically, the study includes a comprehensive literature review on sustainability and rural housing, coupled with comparative case analyses of international floating villages in China, Thailand, and Brunei. These are contrasted with field observations in Hor Al-Chibaish (Dhi Qar Province), where reed-based settlements reflect both long-standing traditions and emerging infrastructural challenges.
The findings underscore declining water levels, limited financing, and inadequate infrastructure as key obstacles hindering sustainable housing initiatives in the marshlands. Concurrently, cultural heritage—notably, Sumerian-inspired building techniques and artisanal crafts—plays a pivotal role in maintaining community identity and resilience. The study
concludes by proposing targeted policy measures, including
enhanced financial support, green building practices,
infrastructure development, and community empowerment, to
foster integrated sustainability. By harmonizing these four
dimensions, marshland communities can reinforce cultural
continuity, economic viability, and ecological balance within
Iraq’s distinctive wetland environment.
