Abstract
With rapid urbanization, cities contribute to around two-thirds of CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions, along with the depletion of various energy sources and natural resources. Sustainable urban development serves as a key approach to balancing human needs with nature while addressing long-term urban design challenges. It also encourages local community participation throughout different stages of urban design and decision-making processes. Several global assessment tools have been developed and implemented in various countries. This paper examines the applicability of well-known methods for evaluating urban design projects in Iraq, considering the country’s unique local context. The study critically reviews and compares three prominent urban sustainability assessment methods BREEAM Communities (UK), LEED-ND (USA) and PEARLS Communities (UAE, as a neighboring country to Iraq). A detailed qualitative and quantitative analysis was conducted, focusing on key evaluation criteria like content use, weighting systems, scoring, certification ratings, and contextual relevance. The findings highlight that these global tools are specifically designed to assess sustainability within their respective local contexts. As a result, they cannot be universally applied to all regions, particularly Iraq, where urban challenges and development conditions differ significantly.
