The Interventions in The Ruined Heritage Buildings and Their Assessment According to Conservation charters (Beit al-Tutunji is a Case Study)

Since the primary purpose of restoring historic buildings is to protect and preserve them as they are, any modification or renovation to those buildings and their elements works to change their features during the rebuilding process of the destroyed or lost parts. To this end, it must be without prejudice to the principles outlined in the conservation charters. Therefore, this extent should be determined precisely for each case to avoid restoring archaeological buildings leading to objective and sometimes even historically misleading results. The 2014 - 2017 war caused massive damage to Mosul city, especially the old one. Many of its heritage buildings have changed in a way that distorts the identity of the ancient city, distinguished by its unique architectural elements, affecting its situation on the Tentative World Heritage List. To great extent, this heritage suffers from a fundamental problem represented in individual reconstruction processes without any rules governing them, and at the same time, it harms the architectural and heritage value of the city. Thus, this study aims to shed light on the study of the reconstruction process of one of the heritage houses in the old city of Mosul (Beit al- Tutunji) and the extent to which it applies the standards of world heritage, in order to reach results showing whether it can be considered a successful model that can be a sample for the rest of the future reconstruction processes in the city.
