Abstract

This study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the tribological behavior of 316L stainless steel processed by SLM. The improved wear resistance of the as-built sample can be mainly attributed to grain-boundary strengthening. However, the results also indicate that, upon increasing the heat treatment temperature and/or normal load, the wear rate and coefficient of friction increase. The worn surfaces in the SLM-processed parts evolve from grooves parallel to strain-hardened tribolayers.
