Impacts of Energy Drink on Liver Metabolic Changes of College Students in Northern Iraq

The consumption of energy drinks has been linked to several health issues, including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, headaches, sleep disorders, substance abuse, stress, and hyperactivity. This cross-sectional study has analyzed the relationship between energy drinks and liver disease parameters. Total of 50 students including males and females aged 18 to 35 were classified into two groups, (1) the healthy group (25) = healthy individuals living inside the university not consume energy drinks and (2) the energy drink group (25) = case individuals living inside the university consumption of energy drinks. The serum concentration of liver parameters aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) were measured by Cobas311. Serum concentration of vitamin B12 was measured by VIDAS®. Additionally, anthropometric measurements were also evaluated. The results showed that the levels of ALT, AST, and vitamin B12 significantly increased in the group of energy drink consumption when compared with the healthy group (p < 0.001). levels of ALT, AST and vitamin B12 significantly increased in males more than in females (p<0.01). The current study concluded that energy drink has significant elevation biochemical parameters including LFT such as ALT, AST, and anthropometric parameters. The results also show that Excessive energy drink consumption has been linked to several cases of clinically apparent acute liver injury.
