Abstract

A hospital acquired infection is usually one that first appears three days after a patient is admitted to a hospital or other health care facility. Infections acquired in a hospital are also called nosocomial infections. About 5-10% of patients admitted to hospitals develop a nosocomial infection. The CDC estimates that more than two million patients develop hospital acquired infections in the USA each year. About 90,000 of these patients die as a result of their infections.
